Milk cans were used in the U. Dairy farmers stored and transported the milk in these cans to customers in town. Even though milk cans were widely used and the only method of carrying milk at the time, it also impacted dairy farming negatively. In some cases, the milk cans were not cleaned perfectly and the method of transferring the milk to the customer proved to be ineffective and cumbersome. Dairy farmers had a particular way of milking cows during the 19th century. Farmers would milk the cows and the milk would be administered into the pail underneath the udder.

Mumbai: Thanks to an alert citizen, the Naya Nagar police has seized a stock of flavoured canned milk that had passed its expiration date but was openly being sold at heavily discounted rates by fudging expiry dates from a makeshift stall outside the Mira Road railway station Sunday evening. Preet Parakh saw some people selling the ready-to-drink packaged milk for Rs 10 per can ml under the guise of a promotional campaign by the Rajasthan-based manufacturer.
Sensing something fishy, Parakh purchased a couple of cans and was shocked to find that the price, packaging details and best buy dates were beyond the shelf-life that had been fudged and covered by bold promo stamps.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for taking out dents, creases, etc. My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view through my improved device. Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A. A disk C is convexed upon its lower surface and is adapted to rest upon the concaved bottom of the can to which the device is to be applied, and a screw D has its lower end swiveled in a central opening formed in said disk C and its upper end has an operating wheel E fixed thereto.
A block F has a threaded opening therein for the reception of said screw and the ends of said block are slotted as at F, and pins H pass through registering apertures in the walls of said slots and upon these the inner ends of the links I are ivotally mounted, their outer ends being plvotally mounted upon the pins J which pass through registering apertures in the walls of the slotted lugs N which project from the inner concaved surfaces 5 of the formers or swage blocks 0. Said blocks 0 have their upper portions tapering as shown and each is of semi-cylindrical ships and hollow and their outer convexed su aces are adapted to conform to.
Link chains T are fastened each at its lower end to an eye W fastened to the inner surface ‘of the former blocks 0 and said links are adapted to engage the slots R formed in the plates which areseated in the recesses in the upper surface of the block M, said chains being provided for the purpose of holdin the two former blocks 0 in different ad usted positions according to the size of the can which they are to operate upon in taking out the dents in the wall thereof.
In operation, the can is placed upon theconcaved plate A with the convexed bottom of the canconforming to’the dished upper surface of said plate and the disk which is swiveled to the lower end of the screw is placed within the can and its lower tapering surface conforming to the concaved, bottom of the can. By this arrangement, it will be noted that the shape of the bottom of the can Will be maintained by reason of the disk and plate both conforming to the bottom thereof, thus allowing the bottom Patented July 23,

A milk churn is a tall, conical or cylindrical container for the transportation of milk. Milk was originally distributed in ‘ pails ‘, a lidded bucket with a handle. Often two pails would be carried on either end of a wooden carrying yoke. Once the railways started carrying milk, the pail proved less than ideal as it was top-heavy and tended to spill.
Dairy farmers used a tall conical wooden container – a butter churn – to ‘ churn ‘ the milk into butter, and this proved to be preferable for the railways to transport. It held a lot more milk about seventeen gallons and its conical shape made it less likely to spill or topple over. These wooden churns were intrinsically heavy, and starting in the s a steel version was introduced and soon became the standard.
The usage of the word ‘churn’ was retained for describing these containers, although they were not themselves used for ‘churning’ butter. As with British Railway Milk Tank Wagons , the milk churn was a standard size; the older galvanised iron conical type held 17 gallons, whilst the cylindrical type with the mushroom-shaped lid introduced in the s held ten gallons. Each churn carried a brass plate near the top to identify the owning company and when full it would have a white paper label tied to the handle on the lid of the conical type and to the side handle of the cylindrical type , which was used for accounting purposes by the creamery or dairy.
In Britain, milk churns would be left by dairy farmers by the roadside on purpose-built platforms, or stands, at the right height to be loaded on to the dairy’s cart or lorry.

DoNNnLL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hermatite, Jefi’erson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans, of which the fol ing aperfectly sanitary can which may bev lowing is a specification containing a full,. My invention relates’to improvements in milk cans,’the object of my invention being to construct a milk can, the side walls ofivhich are substantially vertical and parallel and in which the bottom of the can; joins the sides without angles, thereby constructmore thoroughly cleansed than a’ can having angles on its inside’and producing a’ can in which the mouth or open.
A further object of my invention is to construct a base for the can, the lower margin of which is of greater diametrical dimensions than the can proper, which “base provides a protection for the can proper when on its side and which base coacts with a specially designed cover-to permit of. The present application is a divisional ap-‘ plication from theapplicat-ion filed by me March 19,, serially numbered , However, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to such a one piece construction’ as it is obvious the bottom and body portion 1 may be formed of separate pieces and tinned or otherwise arranged to conceal the joint between them.
The sides-of Zthe base fia’re downwardly and outwardly and its lowermost margin is reinforced by Ea ring The ring 5 is provided with an integral flange 8 projecting downwardly from the under face thereof, which flange is perforated at intervals for the reception of rivets or the like for securing the ring to the can. The ring 6 andcover 10 are preferablybf greater diametrical dimensions than the base may be formed at the lower margin ofv the base.
Adjacent the upper margin of the can and on the periphery thereof is a reinforcing ring 3 so that when the cans are in transit and placed one above the other the base rmg 4 will be securely held in position between the hinge members 13 of another can. Byreason of the construction of the cover and base for the can of greater diametrical dimensions than the can proper, it is obvious that the body of the can 1s protected against being dented or damaged by striking against objects in a vertical as well as in a horizontal position.
As shown in Fi 3, the can is in a horizontal position and may be rolled upon the base and cover in which position there is little danger of the body of the can being dented by striking objects over which the can may be rolled. The nesting feature and the protecting of the can proper, however, are incident to the formation of the can proper.

The nails and the key opened meat cans suggest a similar post – date (Rock 14). The evaporated milk cans with matchstick filler holes postdate.
You hardly remember the last time you used evaporated milk or even bought some. And all three cans are past the date on the label. Does evaporated milk go bad? Since this variety of milk often comes canned, you might think that it probably should last past the best-by date. Evaporated milk, or unsweetened condensed milk , usually comes in tin cans. Like most other cans these are shelf stable so you can store unopened ones at room temperature. The pantry is where most people store unopened cans of evaporated milk, but a cupboard in the kitchen works too.
Of course, you can go with a makeshift seal using plastic or aluminum wrap and a rubber band, but a resealable container is both more convenient and provides a better seal. However, frozen and thawed evaporated milk usually works okay for cooking and baking purposes.
